New member welcome letter, Summer 2012

Greetings HiP House member,

A very warm welcome to Hillegass-Parker House (affectionately known as HiP)! Your house manager for the summer is Margaret Byron (room 48); our Spring house manager, Erin Condit-Bergren (room 53), will also be on hand for the first two weeks of the summer contract period. We are writing to give you important information about moving into your new house. You can always email the house manager at: [hiphm@bsc.coop].

By the way, if you have any questions not answered below, you can search the house wiki (this website), for more information about room bids, workshift descriptions, and many other topics, under the Internal section. If you can’t find what you need here, please feel free to contact us.

New Member Orientations, Mandatory. The co-op is a complicated, high functioning environment and thus, your getting acquainted is very important. If you have never lived in a BSC co-op, you must attend one of the co-op wide new member orientations, located at the Rochdale’s Davis Park at 2424 Haste St. They are scheduled for May 21 at noon, May 30 at 6pm, and June 15 at 5pm. The co-op will charge you a $25 fine if you fail to attend one of these orientations, so reserve your spot now: [WWW]http://www.bsc.coop/ (and click on the RSVP link in the right sidebar).

In addition you MUST attend a house level orientation on Wednesday, May 23rd, at 7:30 PM (OR possibly a makeup session, time and date TBA) following dinner, in the main house living room. At this orientation, we will take a tour of the house and talk about workshifts. You will owe 4.5 hours of workshift per week. For the first 2 weeks or so, everyone will sign up for temporary workshifts; after that, the workshift manager will assign you to permanent shifts based on your schedule and preferences, which you will submit online. Remember that workshifts start the day you move in. Sign up for workshifts on the bulletin board across from the office on the first floor of Main House. If you have any workshift-related questions, you can contact our summer workshift manager, Michelle Maeller, at hipwm@bsc.coop.

When you move in, you will be assigned a temporary room. Approximately one week later, we will have room bids, where you will choose your permanent room for the rest of the semester, based on seniority and application number. Seniority is determined by the number of active points you have; points do not become active until you have lived at HiP for at least six weeks.

House Emails - You must join the Hip_Announce Email List! Please subscribe to the house e-mail lists by sending blank messages to the following addresses: hip_announce-join@lists.berkeley.edu and hip_house-join@lists.berkeley.edu. Most important announcements (like when we’re having room bids) are done through hip_announce, and other important but unofficial announcements (like impromptu house social gatherings) are done through hip_house, so it’s important to sign up for both to know what’s going on. If you do not join the hip_announce list, you may miss important announcements related to things like workshift or required new member meetings. You will still be held responsible for anything you miss (you may even be fined), so it's best to sign up for the list right away.

Room Responsibilities, Furniture and Storage - Each room comes furnished with a desk, a chair, a bed, a dresser, and a closet or wardrobe. You’ll need to provide your own sheets — all our house beds are extra long, which means they are 80” (not 75”). Most standard singles have twin-size beds, and most deluxe singles have full-size beds, though there are some exceptions. Each room is also hooked up to the internet, both wired and wireless. You are welcome to bring your own furniture and we can help you find a temporary place for the house-provided furniture, but you are responsible for insuring that everything that was in the room when you arrive is there again when you leave. Also, the house unfortunately has no storage space for personal items (such as extra furniture, boxes, etc.) that don’t fit in your room, so if you have a lot of stuff, you may wish to leave it with a family member or rent a storage unit. Note that there is a $10 per month fee for using a personal fridge or space heater in your room (unless you need it for medical reasons), partly to offset the electricity costs, and partly to discourage people from using high energy appliances in their rooms. Don’t worry, there is space allotted in the communal fridge and pantry for personal food items.

House Dinners, Food Info, and House Meetings: House dinners are Sundays through Thursdays at 7 PM during the food delivery period. Every other Sunday we hold a house meeting during dinner. For breakfast, lunch, and any other times you may feel peckish, help yourself to anything you find in the pantry, fridge, or freezer, with the following exceptions: 1) food in personal bins (they are marked with names) 2) Large cuts of meat, stored on the bottom shelf of the freezer and 3) any food that is on the back right shelf of the walk-in fridge (which is reserved for cooks). Feel free to cook and consume anything else you find! If in doubt, ask around— your housemates will help you find spatulas, vegetables, and most importantly coffee.

Parking is about $384/semester (less in summer) at the house if you get a spot. These are assigned by points, just as rooms are. Currently, most of our parking spots are taken. Many residents with cars acquire a parking pass from the city of Berkeley and park on the streets near the house (this will require that you register your car to the house address, and provide some form of proof of residence to the city of Berkeley), which is also much cheaper than renting a spot from the co-op. Alternatively, you may wish to join City Carshare, which has a pod conveniently located at our house. City CarShare offers reasonable rates and a discount for UC Berkeley students.

Mail to you should be addressed to the following address:

2545 Hillegass Avenue
Berkeley CA 94704-2913

If you expect mail to arrive at this address before May 19th, please let us know.

Finally, note that smoking (of any kind) is restricted to areas 20 feet away from all buildings. In inclement weather, smoking near the carriage house is fine.

Safe travels and happy moving!

Sincerely,
Margaret Byron
